Direct Contract vs Upwork: Which Is Better When Hiring a Developer?

Every client eventually asks: should I hire on Upwork or go direct? Both work. The right choice depends on trust level, project size, and whether you need platform protection.

Upwork — when to use it

• First time working with a developer you have never met.
• You want escrow and dispute resolution built in.
• You need a paper trail for accounting or procurement.
• Project is $500–$15,000 and scope is defined.

Direct contract — when to use it

• You have worked together successfully before (often after 1–2 Upwork projects).
• Long-term retainer or ongoing development — lower fees matter.
• You have your own contract, NDA, and milestone payment process.
• Faster payments via Wise, PayPal, or bank transfer.

Fee comparison (rough)

Upwork charges clients roughly 3–5% on payments plus payment processing. Developers pay 10–20% service fee (tiered). On a $5,000 project, platform fees can total $800–$1,200+. Direct contract eliminates most of that — but you lose escrow unless you replicate it with milestones.

How to do direct contract safely
