How to Develop Software: MVP Guide for Non-Technical Founders
From idea to deployed MVP — planning, tech choices, development process, testing, and launch. Written for founders who need to ship software without becoming developers.
By Raymond Tse · Full-stack & Web3 engineer · Abuja, Nigeria
ScienceSoft, YouTube tutorials, and Reddit threads all say the same thing: plan, build, test, deploy. What they rarely tell non-technical founders is how to execute without writing code yourself. This guide is for you — the person with the idea, the budget, and the deadline.
Phase 1: Clarify your MVP (week 1)
- Write a one-page product brief: problem, user, solution, success metric.
- List 3–5 must-have features. Cut everything else.
- Sketch screens on paper or Figma — even ugly sketches help developers quote accurately.
- Decide: web app, mobile app, or both?
Phase 2: Find your developer (week 1–2)
- Upwork: escrow-protected, filter by "100% job success" and live portfolios.
- Fiverr: good for defined gigs — "build my MVP in 6 weeks."
- Direct contract: lower fees, milestone payments, faster for repeat clients.
- Always: paid trial task before big contract.
Phase 3: Build in 4–8 weeks
- Week 1–2: Setup, auth, database, core UI shell.
- Week 3–4: Main user flow working — the one thing your app exists to do.
- Week 5–6: Payments, emails, admin tools, polish.
- Week 7–8: Production deploy, testing, bug fixes, handoff.
Phase 4: Launch and learn
Deploy. Share with 20 real users. Watch where they drop off. Fix that one thing. Your MVP is not supposed to be perfect — it is supposed to prove people want it.
What a good developer delivers
- Working production URL you can share with investors.
- GitHub repo in your organization.
- Basic documentation — how to deploy, env variables, admin access.
- Weekly demos — you see progress, not just status updates.

I scope MVPs in 24 hours, ship in 4–8 weeks, milestone-based. BetJuju, Boom Tech, NAIJA GPT — all started as founder ideas turned into live products.
