Fixed Price vs Hourly: Which Payment Model When Hiring a Developer?

When to use fixed-price milestones vs hourly billing for software projects — scope control, risk, and what experienced clients do.

By Raymond Tse · Full-stack & Web3 engineer · Abuja, Nigeria

Fixed price — best when scope is clear

You know what you want: landing page, MVP with 8 screens, Stripe integration, admin panel. Fixed price with milestones puts risk on the developer to estimate right — and keeps your budget predictable.

Hourly — best when scope changes

Maintenance, legacy codebase, "we are figuring it out as we go" — hourly works. Set a weekly cap. Review timesheets. Use Upwork Work Diary or ask for daily standup notes.

Hybrid model (what many clients do)

Fixed price for MVP v1. Then hourly or monthly retainer for v2 features. Start with a defined build, prove the relationship, then shift to ongoing work. I use this on most long-term client relationships.

Rate ranges for strong remote developers (2026)

  • Mid-level full-stack: $25–$50/hr on Upwork.
  • Senior full-stack / Web3 / AI: $45–$85/hr.
  • Fixed MVP projects: often $4k–$15k depending on scope.
  • Nigeria-based senior engineers: often 30–50% below US rates for equal output.

Not sure which model fits your project?

Tell me your scope — I will recommend fixed or hourly and give an honest estimate. No fluff.
